Removing derogatory credit from a credit reports history is simple but not always easy. You'll hear that its a breeze, a walk in the park a cinch. The fact is that it is. If you know what you're doing and more importantly what to do after the first NO.
To remove derogatory credit, professionals don't just dispute an account. There's more involved to the dispute. Where they mail to, confirmation for receipt of the letter and other tactics come into play. I want to share a couple I used when working on my personal credit. They might work for you.
One tactic I used while removing derogatory credit from my records was a simple, insignificant question. Posed at the collectors. "Can you show proof you're allowed to collect this debt from me?" I was surprised when I read this in a credit repair manual. I always figured, if they're calling, they can collect. Not always. I can say it worked like a charm, but on one account, the collection company didn't have the proper documentation needed to collect. After that I disputed with bureaus and had it removed. That alone was a 40 point boost.
To remove derogatory credit you must have some understanding of the laws and procedures collectors have to follow. I learned a lot about credit and my rights after reading through some of the Fair Credit Reporting Act. I tried reading the actual documentation. It was way to confusing for me. I would recommend getting an abbreviated or short version that covers the key points. I found it very tough, reading the actual documentation and take my work for it, don't read it before bed. You'll fall asleep.
Third, while removing derogatory credit and reading up on tactics I found that opting out of credit bureaus kept information from getting into the hands of my creditors. Collectors have the ability to subscribe to credit bureaus and with that they are alerted of almost any financial moves you make. New application for credit you place and banking information are part of what they get, along with late payments to credit cards, of course. That's why some credit cards raise your interest rate without you ever having a late payment to that card.
The education I received was an eye opener. I didn't have a clue when I started out. Now I have a better understanding and better credit. It took a couple of months to see real changes. Taking care of it this time around is my next goal.
